"Biased Plies" (biased-plies)

When the twins were introduced I thought the Scion was the better looking car - I liked the sharper headlights and intake treatment. Recently though I've started preferring the BRZ, coming around to the simpler, more understated design and thinking that perhaps it looks more mature and will age better. Which do you prefer?

I think the grill on the BRZ makes it look wider and therefore slightly cooler. Not a huge difference though.

I prefer the Subaru to the Toyota. Note, I'm in Japan, so I don't know if there are any differences between the USDM and JDM models or if there are differences between JDM Toyota and USDM Scion besides the badging.

FRS for daaaayyyyyz. It's supposed to be a fun, exciting car and the sharper bumper makes it look as such. The big moustache just makes it look lazy, fat and old.

Because dammit, dogs are cool and mustaches can be cool, but together they are not cool. It's just like in math where two positives make a negative...
Also, I seriously had a laugh at this. Of all the people and all the comments to mis-reply to, this one works out just about perfect.

I honestly can't tell the difference between them aside from the badges.

The brz starts at a higher trim level and had a different suspension set up than the FRS (brz had more grip and less oversteer).

The more I see them, the less I give a crap. They're the same cars. Only reason to buy the BRZ is world rally blue, otherwise you might as well save some money.

Ah so in Japan the FRS is sold as the GT86.
Weird, I remember reading a build thread from Japan (I forgot which forum) but the owner had a FRS.

Emotional response: BRZ. It isn't a Toyota/ Scion (destroyer of things cool and fun).
I like the looks of the BRZ better and most reviews prefer the BRZ handling, as it is a little more composed.
Depreciation: BRZ will hold a little better. Fewer sold will always mean these are harder to find and the seller can set the price a little more.
Where the FR-s has an advantage: Configuration. Subaru usually has some great factory options like Exhaust, but here none. Licence plate frame and your about done. Scion offers some "performance" parts.
Now, if I could get the performance packages and the GT86 badges I would probably go Scion.
If I could get the performance packages then BRZ would be a hands down winner.
Since I live in the real world and have to make sacrifices I will stick with the BRZ.

I prefer my old school 1977 S30 280Z over these posers. Straight 6?...check....no power brakes nor steering? Check, RWD? Yepperz, and w/a 4 speed, and A/C that still works!

In an alternate reality, we have a Scion that introduced the FR-S back in 2004 instead of the xB, introduced the Tc as either a V6 (3.5l V6 from the Camry) or turbo 2.0 I4. THEN, after establishing their reputation as a good brand, bring in the first gen xB (and NEVER make a second gen xB, at least not like they did) Then brought in the Supra successor as a luxurious, turbo-charged I6 or V6 model above it around 2015. With a lineup like that (FR-S, Turbo Tc, lightweight xB, and ~400HP M4 competitor) it would be one hell of a brand.
Sadly, they did none of those things.

In Japan they like to put Scion badges on their Toyota's, just like in the USA Scion owners put Toyota badges on their cars.
Funny.

Actually you can get a shit load of TRD parts from the dealership for the FRS. It's quite sad in comparison to the BRZ. Springs, brake pads, intake...list goes on. Though the worth of those TRD parts is quite questionable. The whole BRZ thing won't mean much, since the differences barley stem the worth of price.

TRD was exactly my point, but I was lazy and didn't want to over guess what was there (Its been a while since I looked)
On the BRZ price front though, any price difference is worth it on that small of a difference. It may be ~2% now, but I suspect on resale the BRZ will consistently get 3-4% more. Guessing mostly, but when the "rare" BRZ goes on sale in 5 years and there are 5 FR-s within 10 minutes...

I'll offer my 2 cents.
I swapped to a BRZ rate suspension setup on my own FR-S, and the car responded wonderfully. I find the FR-S bumper to be better looking, and the proper HVAC layout (brz) had a hefty price attached to it.
For the price difference in the cars I installed an intake, exhaust, header and lowering springs. Car is magic. I do envy that subaru blue though.

I just got a crazy good deal on a new 13 FRS. I could not get the same deal on a leftover BRZ. It is the '10 series' which means it has push button start, auto HIDs, toggle switches, and a few other bobbles. The special editions FRS (10 series, monogram, release series) are mostly equivalent to BRZ Limited except the FRS has extra cheesy names. I got my FRS with the TRD intake and exhaust, which keeps the warranty intact, sounds good, and adds a couple HP. No intake or exhaust options from Subaru, although I've heard of TRD parts being installed by some dealers without question. I'm too old to care about the badge on the car. They are the same car and I choose the one that was the better deal with options that I wanted (exhaust/intake).
Also, my mid-sized midwestern town has a Toyota dealer but doesn't have a Subaru dealer. A Scion can be serviced at any Toyota dealer, which is nice since there are more of them.

I'm sure it was an FRS because it was the special anniversary edition white one.
But that is funny, I was just about to ask if they do that haha.

Exactly, Subaru builds them and engineered it. I'd give them my money.
Also I wouldn't have to look at a xD every time I went to the dealer.

If you don't mind me asking, how good of a deal was it?
A Toyobaru is just outside of what I'd like to spend on a car and with a slight lack of practicality (I like throwing my bikes in my car) I can't completely justify it. If there are great deals to be had though I might just be able to overlook that (and get a bike rack).

Sticker was around $28k for the 10-series manual FRS. There was (is?) a $2000 incentive on leftover 10 series FRS, and the dealer knocked another $1000 in discount. So figure roughly $25k. I;ve heard of even better deals if you find a dealer that has a leftover new 13 FRS that really wants it gone, and the base FRS will be less starting out so that might be an option too. It is a really good car, greater than the sum of its parts.

I've actively avoided test driving one for fear of being smitten by something I can't justify but good deals on leftovers might be the last drop. I'll look around to see if Canadian dealers have similar incentives. Thanks for the info.

Well, I don't have it in me to buy a Scion (most tC Owner's have scarred me for life), and I don't have it in me to buy a RWD Subaru, so neither.

yeah I wouldn't go above 18's on a BRZ. A squared 18x8.5 setup would be amazing! If you go too wide you're just hurting performance, the brz doesn't really struggle to put down the power it has.

I would much rather have a GT86, the name pays homage to the precursor (AE86). However, I understand why they went with Scion given that it is the "youth" brand.

A dealer I went to had an IGNIT10N series left over from 2013 and they only marked it down $1000. It was much more expensive than the 2014 I wanted, and had all the options I didn't care at all for. They tried to convince me to choose the leftover one.
Why are Toyota dealers so extreme in whether they're wonderful or terrible? There is no in between! lol
